When you click on an item the text will be crushed by the side plates. Click again and it returns to its original state.
In this example, items 1 -  5 use image file backgrounds. Plate number 6, called "Links", uses the applet's "platecolor" parameter to create the background colour.
 

Other parameters include: 

Size, type and style of the font
All visible colours
Size of the plates
